Earthquake-triggered liquefaction can cause extensive damage and loss of life. While Utah has historically experienced liquefaction-producing earthquakes, it has thus far escaped significant damage. However, the densely populated Wasatch Front region has a 93% probability of one or more earthquakes capable of generating liquefaction in the next 50 years. This coupled with large liquefaction-susceptible areas equates to a significant risk within the lifetime of the majority of residents.

This informative and concise but non-technical publication answers these questions:
What is liquefaction, how does it occur, and what damages can it cause?
Where and when is liquefaction likely to occur?
How great is the risk and what can be done about it?
