A total of 87 oil and gas exploration and development wells were completed in Utah during 1989. Some wildcats and outposts were drilled along established trends or structures, but many tested new plays or concepts. Most of the drilling activity occurred in the Paradox and Uinta basins resulting in a number of significant wildcat discoveries and field extensions.

A total of 58 development wells were completed in Utah during 1989. Development drilling continued to be high in Altamont-Bluebell, Monument Butte, Greater Cisco, San Arroyo and Mexican Hat fields. Extensive drilling programs were also conducted in the Duchesne and Greater Aneth field areas. Utah ranked tenth nationally in production of oil and natural gas liquids and fifteenth in production of natural gas. In 1989, oil and gas were produced from 117 fields and 38 undesignated field areas in nine counties. Over 28 million bbls of oil and 277 BCF of gas were produced from the 4115 active wells listed for the state of Utah during the year.
