Analytical studies of the Great Salt Lake, especially those concerning volume, level, salinity and salt load often require that the salinities of the two major bay areas be known, independent of the major north and south arm portions of the lake. Ongoing salinity or chemical studies of Farmington and Bear River Bays have not been made over the years, but a few periodic, short-term studies have, mostly in Farmington Bay. Based on these few studies or samplings, hypothetical salinity relationships have been developed between the salinity within each of the two bay areas and the salinity of the upper south arm brines. These hypothetical relationships form the basis of a portion of this Report of Investigation. The remainder of the report summarizes other salinity aspects of the two bay areas from actual sampling and analytical data.

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the physical, chemical and dynamic nature of the brine systems within Farmington Bay and Bear River Bay.
