Geology of Utah's parks and monuments (UGA-28)
2nd Edition Edited by: D. A. Sprinkel, T. C. Chidsey Jr., and P. B. Anderson For decades geologists have come to Utah to study its geology and to explore for a variety of geologic resources. Of those geologic resources, the well-exposed geology itself is the most important resource that Utah has to offer to future generations of geologists, to people interested in geology, and to its citizens. Simply put, Utah has some of the most spectacular examples of classic geology found anywhere in the world! The geologic examples studied from here are used in classrooms as well as corporate boardrooms. Some of the best of Utah geology are showcased in its many national and state parks, monuments, and recreation areas. Places such as Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Zion are well known for their grand geology and inspiring geologic vistas. But other parks such as Capitol Reef, Dinosaur, Goblin Valley, and Snow Canyon are equal in geologic majesty to their more visited counterparts. Visitors to Utah's parks and monuments are captivated by the variety of plants and wildlife that call the parks home, but it is the landscape, the cliffs and canyons, and the odd rock formations—in a word, the geology—that leaves them awestruck. The Utah Geological Association published the first edition of this guidebook in 2000 to celebrate Utah's geologic parks during the millennium year. The first edition contained articles on each national park, monument, and recreation area in Utah, as well as ten state parks, the only designated "geologic area" in Utah, and a tribal park. In addition, the guidebook included eight topical articles on current research in and around the parks. Since its publication geologists, teachers, students, and visitors from around the world have used this guidebook making it the most popular publication of the Utah Geological Association. The papers included in this publication are listed below: Overview of Utah’s national parks, compiled by T. Connors Overview of the Utah’s state parks, compiled by C. C.
