This 2018 open-file report and digital (GIS) dataset updates and replaces the 1999 interim geologic map of the Escalante and parts of the Loa and Hite Crossing 30 • x 60 • quadrangles, Garfield and Kane Counties, Utah (UGS OFR 368). Many, but not all, geologic features needing revision are updated. Small extensions into adjacent quadrangles are clipped off because newer mapping of these areas has been (Loa) or soon will be released. Spatial placement of most geologic features is based on 1990s standards. The quadrangle extends eastward from near Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park. Exposed rocks range from Permian eolian and marine strata to Tertiary volcanic tuffs derived from the Marysvale volcanic field. Johns Valley near the western border is a deep basin-and-range graben. The rest of the quadrangle is dominated by broad asymmetric folds with generally steep eastern limbs; the largest and most famous is the Waterpocket Fold that forms the heart of Capitol Reef National Park. Surficial alluvial, mass movement, colluvial and eolian deposits are abundant, especially in the higher elevations. The map depicts geologic formations, faults, folds, and other information, and is accompanied by explanatory materials that include geologic unit descriptions, figures, tables, mapping sources, correlation charts, lithologic columns, map symbols, and cross sections.
