The Park City East quadrangle occupies a topographic and structural saddle between the Wasatch Range and Uinta Mountains. The quadrangle is dominated by the Keetley Volcanics, 35-million-year-old volcanic mudflows and lava flows that overlie much older shallow-marine and continental strata that were folded and faulted during the Sevier orogeny. Volcanic rocks erupted from stratovolcanoes that once towered over the eastern end of the Wasatch intrusive belt in and near the quadrangle; those intrusions were the source of mineralization in the Park City mining district. The map area includes historic Park City (once one of the West’s most important Ag-Pb-Zn mining districts), the Deer Valley Resort, the northern end of Jordanelle Reservoir, and burgeoning suburban development along the U.S. Highway 40 and Utah Highway 248 corridors.
