It has been observed that cleats in coal are one of several geologic features that affect methane emission from coal. This report summarizes the results of an investigation conducted in the Dutch Creek Mine, Pitkin County, Colorado. The mine is one of four mines selected for the University of Utah Project: Formation and Retention of Methane in Coal. Topics discussed include: cleat and joint systems in the underground (face cleat N.15 W.) and in surface exposures (major N.75 E.), collection of an oriented sample, megascopic and microscopic description of the coal (major lithotype component -bright clarain -and rank -medium volatile bituminous), residual gas content determination (0.30 cm3/g), evaluation of coking properties (Composition Balance Index=0.94 and Rank Index=5.6), mechanical properties (Vickers mean value 16.78 kg/mm2 and Shore rebound hardness number 23.55), proximate analysis, density (mean=1.39 g/cm3) and porosity determination (mean 3.590/0).
