The George Mountain quadrangle straddles the Sevier fault zone and includes the easternmost part of the Markagunt Plateau and the west edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Strata of both plateaus are tilted gently east. The Paunsaugunt Plateau is capped by the colorful Claron Formation, made famous for its spectacular exposures at nearby Bryce Canyon National Park; the plateau's west edge exposes Upper Cretaceous coastal plain strata, the westward equivalent of better exposed and better studied dinosaur-bearing strata of the Markagunt Plateau, thus revealing about 4500 feet (1370 m) of tectonic offset on the fault zone at this latitude.
