Canyonlands National Park is a vast wilderness of exposed and naked rock. On one level of understanding the splendor is stark and simple - a tapestry of deeply shaded canyons filled with pinnacles and spires and distant flat-topped buttes. But, like all masterpieces, there is something even more compelling about Canyonlands than its visual grandeur. The geological wonderland frequently brings forth and irresistible to explore - to learn more about how the canyons were formed and about the ancient peoples who once called them home.

Although Canyonlands contains 527 square miles of rocky wilderness it has only 32 miles of paved roads. The paved roads can provide a brief introduction to the wonders of the park, but if you really want to see this fascinating area you must be willing to leave the asphalt behind. The fun begins in the backcountry, where a large network of jeep roads and hiking trails await your arrival. It is the purpose of this book to acquaint you with these access routes into the park's interior and to tell you abut the points of interest you can expect to see along the way. 240 color and b&w photographs and 59 detailed maps have been included to help you choose the adventure that is right for you.
