A total of 103 oil and gas exploration and development wells were completed in Utah during 1990. The majority of the wildcat and outpost wells were drilled along established trends or structures, but several evaluated relatively untested areas. Most of the drilling activity was in the Paradox and Uinta basins, resulting in a number of wildcat discoveries and field extensions.

A total of 77 development wells were completed in Utah during 1990. Extensive drilling programs were conducted in the Altamont, Bluebell, and Natural Buttes fields. The level of development drilling was also high in the Monument Butte Greater Aneth, Brundage Canyon, and Mexican Hat fields.

Utah ranked eleventh nationally in production of oil and natural gas liquids and ninth in production of natural gas. In 1990, 011 and gas were produced from 126 named fields and 29 unnamed fields in nine counties. Over 27 million bbls of oil and 32 I Bcf (billion cubic feet) of gas were produced from 4,057 active wells in the state during the year.
